On 6th February 2025, we celebrate Time To Talk Day, a day dedicated to fostering open conversations about mental health. We can help our own mental health by focusing on the 5 Ways of Wellbeing: Being Active, Connecting, Keep Learning, Taking Notice, and Giving. These simple yet powerful actions can significantly enhance our mental wellbeing.
1. Being Active
Physical activity is not just about fitness; it’s a great way to boost your mood and reduce stress. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a dance class, or a yoga session, find an activity you enjoy and make it a part of your routine. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters.

2. Connecting
Building and maintaining strong relationships with family, friends, and the community is crucial for our mental health. Take time to connect with others, whether it’s through a chat over coffee, a phone call, or participating in community events. These connections provide emotional support and a sense of belonging.

3. Keep Learning
Engaging in new learning experiences can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of purpose. Try picking up a new hobby, taking a course, or simply reading a book on a topic that interests you. Continuous learning keeps our minds active and engaged.
4. Taking Notice
Being mindful of the present moment can help us appreciate the world around us and reduce stress. Take time to notice the little things, whether it’s the beauty of nature, the taste of your food, or the feeling of the sun on your skin. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, can also be beneficial.

5. Giving
Acts of kindness, whether big or small, can create positive feelings and a sense of reward. Volunteering, helping a neighbour, or simply offering a smile can make a difference. Giving not only benefits others but also enhances our own wellbeing.

The Importance of Talking
Finding time to talk to people in a non-judgemental and open way is essential. Conversations about mental health can break down stigma, provide support, and encourage those struggling to seek help. Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to talk about mental health. Just being there to listen can make a significant impact.
ActionOnLoneliness
Last year we launched a project aimed at linking people with organised activities, called ActionOnLoneliness. We’ve set up a website that allows organisations to share their regular organised meetings, activities and events that members of the public can find by simply entering their postcode. These activities can help not just tackle the feeling of loneliness, but help in many of the methods to help your wellbeing listed above.

Signposting to Services
If you or someone you know needs additional support, there are many services available. In the UK, organizations like Time To Talk Mental Health UK, Mind, Rethink Mental Illness, and the National Council for Mental Wellbeing offer resources and support for mental health challenges. Don’t hesitate to reach out and take advantage of these services.

If you have time to listen, drop in on some brief radio interviews given on this subject:
