September 10th is designated World Suicide Prevention Day.

One of our trustees discussed this on a local radio station GenX Radio Suffolk

The theme this year is “changing the narrative on suicide”.

For too long suicide has been shrouded in silence, stigma and misunderstanding, which has hindered open conversation and prevents people seeking help

By starting the conversation we can change the narrative.. and help others

Globally there are 700k suicides a year (1.3% deaths 2019)

Each one profoundly impacts many people,

Here are some ways you can help…

  • get to know the people you spend time with, at work or even in the shops
  • ask how they are… check in with them
  • listen to their worries and take them seriously
  • acknowledge how difficult things are for them
  • focus on how they are feeling – and don’t give advice!!

They want somebody to listen not to tell them what to do! So don’t be afraid to leave those silent gaps.

Use open questions, and “Say it back” – to check you’ve understood

Other empathy and understanding,

If you think they need to talk, and suspect they are having problems..

Don’t be afraid to ask if they are suicideal

Sometimes people say ” you can’t do that… because it will give them the idea!”

But that’s a myth – people who feel suicidal, often  don’t want to worry or frighten others.. so asking the question, gives them the excuse to open up. And often people say that it’s a great relief to be able to talk about their thoughts

AND Just spending a bit of time with people struggling, and listening openly, in a non-judgemental way, can make a real  difference to others.

If you are struggling:

Do reach out to others,  SAMARITAONs, GP, 111,, other forums

If you are not that bad, but feeling low:

Then remember the 5 little things you can do each day to help your mental health
